Dreamstar brought in Designworks as the creative design company to craft a concept design that would establish a new gold standard in high-end rail transportation.
At Designworks, a BMW Group company, innovation meets human-centered design. Dreamstar Lines turned to us to help define the future of overnight rail travel, entrusting us with the initial concept designs for its luxury passenger rail cars. Leveraging our deep expertise in mobility and experience design, we envisioned an environment that would elevate train travel into an experience of unmatched comfort and sophistication.
Dreamstar Lines is set to disrupt the rail travel landscape with its luxury overnight service between Los Angeles and San Francisco. By providing a refined, stress-free alternative to air travel, Dreamstar aims to transform the perception of train travel, making it a desirable and rejuvenating journey rather than just a means of getting from point A to point B.
The goal of the project was to create an interior and exterior environment that embodied luxury, relaxation, and modern convenience. Dreamstar sought to establish itself as the premier choice for discerning travelers who value comfort, privacy, and a seamless experience.
One of the primary challenges we faced was designing a space that balanced high-end aesthetics with functional, space-efficient layouts suited for an overnight journey. Unlike an airplane cabin or a traditional rail car, Dreamstar’s environment needed to support both restful sleep and social engagement, all within a limited footprint. Additionally, integrating smart technology for a seamless passenger experience required a design approach that merged digital innovation with tactile luxury.
Our concept design process began with in-depth research into luxury hospitality, first-class air travel, and historical references from the golden age of rail travel. Inspired by Art Deco elegance and modern boutique hotels, we explored ways to translate these influences into a contemporary rail experience.

The final concept design embodies a blend of opulence and practicality. Our interiors are inspired by Art Deco sophistication, with high-end materials, warm lighting, and rich textures creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. Every detail, from the bespoke suite layouts to the communal lounge spaces, was designed to enhance the overall experience.
Comfort-Centered Design: Prioritizing passenger relaxation through ergonomic layouts, ambient lighting, and materials that promote comfort.
Digital Seamlessness: Ensuring passengers could control their environment—from lighting to temperature and entertainment—via an intuitive mobile interface.
Multi-Use Spaces: Designing cabins that adapt from work and leisure to rest, accommodating different travel needs without compromising aesthetics.

The Dreamstar concept design establishes a new benchmark in rail travel, offering a truly luxurious and rejuvenating alternative to conventional transit. By prioritizing passenger wellbeing and integrating seamless digital experiences, our design has the potential to reshape overnight travel as a time of relaxation rather than just transit.

Though the final implementation is still in development, this concept design sets the stage for future luxury rail travel, providing a compelling new way for travelers to connect between major cities without sacrificing comfort or convenience.
